In addition to our usual Isle of Wight Digital Imaging Group weekly photo tasks, Colin and Carla Haygarth recently took us on a Wildflower and Butterfly quest.

This Photo Walk (26th May) should have ideally taken place during the annual Isle of Wight Walking Festival, but the orchids and butterflies were slightly later in appearing this year.

It was a good day, very warm and sunny shame it was a bit windy.

We spotted many varieties of flowers, several species of butterfly and of course one just had to capture a very enthusiastic Colin (main image above).

The guided three mile (over several hours) walk explored Bonchurch Downs, took a short break for a cup of tea and cake, then led nicely into an expedition down Devils Chimney.

Eagle eyed Amanda provided Colin with his first view this season (2012) of a Bee Orchid.

We were reliably informed The Bee Orchid mimics the distinctive outline of a bee, and are possibly the UK’s most distinctively recognisable orchid.

Of course this is a brief belated report as we have already had the post mortem. Peter was as usual the unfortunate casualty and the butt of most jokes, but he took it all in his stride.

Many thanks to Carla and as for Colin he was an excellent guide, and we look forward to participating in more of Colin’s nature treks.
