IWPOY Founder, Professional Photographer & Tutor Gary Early, said: “We’re really excited about this years IWPOY and hope to receive a great selection of images. Sun Shines on Worldwide Photo Walk walkers On Wight

IWDIG Worldwide Photo Walk

With the  stormy weather during the preceding week and the torrential rain showers earlier in the morning it was amazing to see the clouds clear, blue sky and sunshine timed exactly to the start of the IWDIG 2014 Worldwide Photo Walk.

It was sad that a few walkers had been put off by the weather but there was an enthusiastic turnout including walkers with buggies, wheelchairs and pets. We were extremely grateful to Simon (Elinchrom) and Nathan (Fujifilm) for taking time out from their busy schedules to join us on the walk and spend all of the afternoon demonstrating the equipment and answering everyone’s questions.

Nathan FujifilmThe walk became especially poignant for Nathan, from Fujifilm, as can be seen in the photograph opposite.  As we reached Farringford House, the former home of Alfred, Lord Tennyson who became the Poet Laureate in 1850,  Nathan finally was able to recognise his ancestry.

Quite a few of the walkers witnessed this epiphany and commented that the resemblance was truly remarkable. Nathan commented that from now on no one will be able to question my true heritage,  and that he always knew that somewhere inside there was a poet just waiting to get out!

The walk, or better described as a photographic amble,  took everyone around Freshwater and the Bay Area and lasted about 2 hours, with a few of the walkers taking even longer. There were no complaints about the wet, the cold or the wind, however a few remarks on  just how hot it was getting, in the wet weather gear, were noted from time to time.

Everyone enjoyed the walk and meeting the other photographers. Walkers were trying out Fuji lenses and camera bodies en route and when finally returning to Dimbola enjoyed the refreshments in the tea room.

The Elinchrom Lighting systems were now available for everyone to try out in Dimbola’s studio and many of the walkers took the opportunity to find out all the information they could from both Simon and Nathan. All  the X-series bodies were available along with the complete range of Fujifilm lenses including a prototype of the new 56mm APD.

‘Kids in a candy store’ came to mind and once again a very big thank you to Simon and Nathan, who were there for the whole day I might add, for making the day such a great success.  Thanks also to all the walkers too, we are looking forward to seeing your images and good luck in the Worldwide Photo Walk competition…

Shoot, View & BBQ Fort Victoria

IWDIG BBQ-1192

Taking advantage of the spell of glorious summer weather the Isle of Wight Digital Imaging Group moved their venue to Fort Victoria for the group meeting this week.  A shoot, view and BBQ was the theme for the evening, although the viewing will take place at the meeting next week. ‘Contrast’ was the photographic task set for the evening with the fort, beach and woodland providing plenty of scope for colour, texture and lighting contrasts.

Although the shooting continued throughout the evening, taking advantage of the sunset, location and the sailing around Hurst Castle, the BBQ brought the photography to a halt for a while. With choc-ices, sausages & burgers, fresh strawberries & cupcakes, lashings of ginger beer and plenty to go around a great time was had by everyone. Thanks to Amanda for all of the food preparation, John for teas & coffees and David for supplying the home-grown strawberries. Everyone agreed that it was a great feast and that the evening couldn’t have been better,  sunshine and a warm breeze,  let’s look forward to a few more of these!

Studio Lighting Courses

The IWDIG is pleased to promote the Studio Lighting Courses as shown below. Many of our photographers have already attended one or more of these courses and they come highly recommended,

The course was great, I learnt a lot and was impressed by how professional both the trainer and model were. I’m looking forward to a refresher course later in the year, thanks.

If you’ve always wanted to try studio photography, learn about lighting or just take the chance to shoot a professional model why not give one of these courses a go. To check-out Charlotte’s professional model portfolio just click the picture below.

IWDIG Fujifilm X10 Review

Fujifilm X-10

Before we start this review a special thanks to both Fujifilm and their PR company for the loan of the camera. Although there are already many reviews online we thought that a slightly different approach would be useful. As pretty much all of the technical aspects of the camera have been covered we have chosen to review this camera and all future equipment reviews purely from the perspective of the photographer when taking photographs.

We have put together a small review team that may vary from time to time, with photographers from different backgrounds and hope that this will provide the reader with a better idea of whether this camera is for them.

So let’s get this review rolling.
