Colin Trigg IWDIG Photographer Of The Year 2012

Unbelievable as it may seem it’s once again time to take a look back over the past year. It’s been a very busy year for the Isle of Wight Digital Imaging Group with more than 50 weekly meetings, additional photo walks and events culminating in the annual festive soiree and prize presentation at the group’s base Dimbola Lodge, Freshwater Bay.

Having evolved over the years, but keeping to our ethos, we strive to cater for all genres of photography and all levels of photographers.

In more depth and in addition to our regular meetings, we currently have external activities including Adobe Lightroom Digital Processing, Studio Techniques, Light Painting, Sports & Sailing Action and Nature & Landscape photography.

“It’s only by going out of our comfort zones that we all learn and improve our skills”.

  • We started the year with our first camera review, the Fuji X10, which received various comments from our reviewers.
  • Several outings took place within the year including: Worldwide Photo Walk Carisbrooke; A Sweep Around Newport Aka “The Cold & Damp One” and the Butterfly Walk earlier in the year organised by Colin Haygarth.  These events were open to anyone with an interest in photography, including members of other clubs and mainland guests.
  • Shoot and view evenings including Robin Hill’s Electric Woods. A special mention to John, Verena and Chris for scooping all of the prizes except one.    
  • We took part in National Photo month and the Group spent a most enjoyable evening with a BBQ at the Duver. Not forgetting the Queen’s Royal Visit and Diamond Jubilee Party along with an Olympic Torch Relay (Photos can be viewed here)
  • Amongst this year’s achievements the IWDIG can claim to have been published in “Coast Magazine”, well done again to the Sparrows and if you can believe it “Bricks Bulletin” – Quarr Abbey photographs. Congratulations to Colin, Amanda and Gary.
  • The IWDIG were also winners of the Great Exhibition winning the Best in Britain Celebrated Photographer Award 2012. Thanks to everyone who voted for us, not sure we’ll ever know who they were though, but here’s a good opportunity to thank Amanda for all of her online work – as it would not have been possible without her committment.
  • Photo Work Load: This year saw 26 tasks inc. Tinting; Self-Portrait; Contrasts; Animals and Night Shots to name a few – 2034 images were submitted for the tasks. 
  • 800 images were submitted and considered for the annual IWDIG 2013 Calendar, this year supporting Alzheimer’s Research UK.
  • Including the other events the total all of the images submitted by the IWDIG photographers in 2012 is in excess of 5000 which we reckon is quite an achievement, so well done to you all.

There was just one more thing to do before we sat down to enjoy our annual festive feast (19th December), a presentation for the photographer who has achieved a great deal over the last year. Congratulations to Colin Trigg who was crowned IWDIG Photographer of the Year 2012.  Colin’s image (pictured above) of what we first visualised as the Serengeti turned out in reality to be an image of Thorness Bay. As it was such an exceptional image we had it reproduced as a large canvas print and presented to Colin for the annual award.

Colin always presents a high standard of work and doesn’t run with the crowd by shooting with Nikon or Canon. He has very good Photoshop skills as most of the IWDIG photographers have already seen. He has a great deal of technical knowledge not only with photography buy also in IT and is always willing to help out, at very short notice, to run an evening. Well done to Colin and well deserved. 

After a very successful year we are looking forward to another busy and eventful one in 2013. We will be starting 2013 by promoting the Isle of Wight Photographer of the Year Competition/Awards starting in January and look forward to seeing all of the entries.
